Loved Dr. Fields’ comments. She picked out some of the most searing parts of a very searing book, filled with incredible imagery. One of those is the “Pale Rider,” as Lincoln feels himself to be (p. 165…..”I rumbled in and out of lucidity. I was a pale rider rather than some Presidential candidate…..We rode like that, through time and eternity, on a fairground that would never end.” Didn’t know what Pale Rider signified, though I remembered the Clint Eastwood movie by that name. It refers to the fourth of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, commonly seen as death. Hades trails behind it.
